Fluent and Salmi Platform begin cooperation – surveys provide insights for developing sports and tourism locations

Software company Fluent Progress and survey platform Salmi Platform have launched a new collaboration. Fluent’s product portfolio includes the map- and location-based service Fluent Outdoors, which can now be complemented with survey studies conducted via Salmi Platform.

Through these surveys, municipalities, cities, and other organizations can gain valuable information about the use of local sports, outdoor recreation, and tourism sites — such as utilization rates, intended uses, user profiles, and user satisfaction. With this data, municipalities and other operators can develop local destinations and services and, for example, target marketing and sales efforts more effectively. The surveys can also be carried out independently, even if the organization is not using Fluent Outdoors.

Municipalities and cities have a strong desire to develop the services they offer, but they do not always have the necessary information on what should be improved and how.

“Municipalities and cities have a strong desire to develop the services they offer, but they do not always have the necessary information on what should be improved and how. We want to support our customers in data-driven decision-making, and Salmi Platform’s survey research provides the tools for this”, says Mikko Hassinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Fluent.

Survey studies can also be conducted regularly, for example on a monthly basis, enabling a faster feedback cycle and continuous development.

Surveys can help measure the impact of these locations economically, environmentally, and socially.

“Every visit and every use of a site has an impact on the local area — whether it means usage of hiking trail network, beaches, or ski tracks. Surveys can help measure the impact of these locations economically, environmentally, and socially”, says Wille Markkanen, CEO of Salmi Platform.

“It is important to recognize that even if a particular site does not generate direct revenue for a municipality, its social impact can still be highly significant”, Markkanen adds.

The new collaboration is currently being piloted in the City of Nivala, where an ongoing study is measuring the utilization rates of local nature and sports sites. The survey will remain open until the end of March 2026.

“The survey has already provided important information — for example, about the social impacts of Nivala’s sites. Together with Nivala, we will continue developing the service to make it even more effective”, Hassinen says.
