Fluent Outdoors shows all sports facilities, camping destinations and tourist attractions in the Sotkamo-Vuokatti region on the same platform.
Map and geospatial information service Fluent Outdoors has been in use in the Sotkamo-Vuokatti region for more than a decade.
In the area, the possibilities offered by Fluent Outdoors are used to their full potential: Fluent Outdoors shows all the sports facilities and camping destinations in Sotkamo-Vuokatti, as well as attractions, from ski slopes and skating rinks to beaches and bonfire places, on the same map, and the user can also see in real time when the sites were last renovated.
“Although the most used feature is still where Fluent Outdoors has its roots, i.e. monitoring the maintenance of ski tracks, other sports venues and attractions that have since been added to the service have brought many more opportunities for the residents and tourists of our area,” say sports coordinator Ossi Pulkkinen and the park and sports areas chief Hannu Järvinen from the municipality of Sotkamo.
Benefits for both the local residents and tourists
Ossi Pulkkinen and Hannu Järvinen see that the absolute advantage of Fluent Outdoors is that the service makes it easy to get all sports venues on the same map, and the customer can limit the information according to their own preferences. Hotels and other private service providers in the Sotkamo-Vuokatti area will be also added to the same map through the DataHub database.
A similar service, showing all the destinations related to movement and tourism in one place, has not been used in the Sotkamo-Vuokatti area before.

“The extension will certainly be a good additional feature for us, through which our customers, especially tourists, will be able to figure out the location of various activities, sports facilities and accommodation in our area better.”
Automatic information on, for example, the number of visitors and temperatures
In the Sotkamo-Vuokatti area, Fluent Outdoors’ automatic data collection devices are also currently being piloted, the information from which is automatically transmitted to the map service, and the administrators do not need to take any measures for this.
In the area, for example, water temperature meters are used at beaches and visitor counters at outdoor areas. In this case, the user of the service can see from Fluent Outdoors in real time how crowded, for example, a hiking trail is, or how warm the water is at the nearby beach.
Although there are also other map and geospatial information services in the Sotkamo-Vuokatti area, Pulkkinen and Järvinen remind us that all these services can be used at the same time.
Fluent Outdoors rather complements other services in use by making the location information of various activities as well as up-to-date maintenance information available to everyone.

Fluent Outdoors will not only serve Finnish-speaking users, but also English-speaking citizens and tourists, as all descriptions of the destinations will be also available in English.
